Daniel Garcia


Daniel is from San Jose, California. He is a licensed architect in New York State, a Lecturer at the University of Pennsylvania Weitzman School of Design, and a Visiting Assistant Professor at Pratt Institute School of Architecture. Daniel received his Master in Architecture degree with distinction from the Harvard Graduate School of Design and his Bachelor of Architecture degree from the California College of the Arts. He has served as a guest critic at Columbia University, 

Syracuse University,

California College of the Arts, and several other academic institutions in the United States.


William Smith


William is from Dallas, Oregon. 

He is a licensed architect in the state of Oregon, a Visiting Assitant Professor at the University of Oregon School of Architecture &#38;amp; Environment, founder of the Portland based “City of Possibility” design forum and board member with the Halprin Conservancy.

William received his master in architecture degree with distinction from the Harvard Graduate School of Design and his bachelor of architecture degree from the University of Oregon. He has also served as an architectural guest critic at multiple universities around the world.

Within a narrow rural property, this home carefuly produces a variety of formal and spatial experiences through a subtle arrangement of otherwise normative roof shapes. Two wings of the house bring together shed roofs that when combined, produce a gable. The gentle rotation of the roofs produces outside spaces for a patio and swimming pool.

With a USDA Forest Service Wood Innovation Grant, three speculative projects were researched and design to explore the potential of mass timber across differing building scales and typologies. Each design was finalized in collaboration with structural engineers and visualized in a manner that explained the potential construction process.


Mass Timber Housing︎︎︎


Designed as a kit-of-parts, this proposal for a new housing model addresses a change in Oregon zoning that allows denser housing via the Residential Infill Project (RIP). A two story design allows for three generous units per standard lot, with space remaining for shared gardens.

Each unit’s doors and windows are positioned so as to maintain privacy, while still allowing connectivity between neighbors when desired. The bottom floor of each unit contains the entry, bedrooms and restroom. The upper floor contains the living area, kitchen and an outdoor covered deck.


With the entire home’s structure made of solid wood, most everything else becomes an aestheticized “bolt-on” element, or piece of furniture. While plumbing and air provision are hidden within a raised floor, other infrastructural parts, such as electrical conduit, are allowed to be exposed.

	The structural approach pinwheels mass timber walls around the floor plan. The top floor’s ceiling is supported by upturned beams, allowing an open floor plate without interruption.

A low bench is bisected by a tall, flat plane that acts as an elongated seat-back for the visitor; a tall mast in the Ragdale garden. One side of the seat-back theatrically frames the body of an individual, with a single integrated light glowing above them. The other, longer side of the seat-back can then accommodate three or four guests.

The podium level is comprised of narrow units that are stacked and mirrored across the site to create porosity at the block scale via a passageway activated by operable panels, punched windows, light wells, and exterior stairs.

The pavilion is designed to serve as an inviting colonnade, offering spaces for dining, gathering, and shelter from the elements. It provides guests with a place to sit and enjoy the landscape during the Concéntrico Festival.

The pavilion’s length is aligned to the vineyard rows, gradually reaching toward the river. As a repeatable and scalable system, the pavilion features structural bays measuring 5m in length.&#38;nbsp;

Each bay comprises a simple wood roof made from modular trusses, supported by precast concrete pipe sections commonly used in civil and hydrological projects.

A continuous surface wraps around street trees and other site elements to create eddies of space that gather passersby. People may sit comfortably alone or playfully in groups.
